Prefers to call himself a bare-foot banker since he has spent 16 years in Syndicate Bank as Rural Development Officer and has done his best, working in some of the most difficult areas along the Western Ghats. In 1998, he quit his job to join HDFC Ltd’s Microfinance Institution (MFI) - IASC- a maiden effort in microfinance in India. As CEO of IASC from the inception of the institution, he took the MFI to an enviable position in ten years time. Under his stewardship, IASC became the first in the country to take up individual financing to SHG members and was the first to have a menu of verticals for financing micro-housing, sanitation, debt redemption, etc. He was instrumental in getting the coveted UN Global Compact Award in 2002 for HDFC Ltd.

  From December 2011 to February 2016 he was the Country Director of Water.org and worked as Director, Catalytic Finance till his retirement on 18th August 2017. He and his team in Water.org- India have strived to reach out to over eight lakh families in India for providing microfinance for construction of individual household toilets and household water connections in rural and semi-urban areas. While working in Water.org he was instrumental in getting Water and Sanitation loans included under the Priority Sector Lending list of the RBI.

  Based on the interest developed by him in sanitation since 2002, he motivated his wife and son to start Ashwatham in 2008 and Udaygeeth Constructions in 2013. He is a BSc (Agri) Hons graduate of BHU (1977) and MSc (Agril Econ) post graduate from TNAU Coimbatore (1979). Uday is an accredited Green Finance Specialist from RENAC Germany.
